In my artwork, I create environments with projected video, animation and sound that use natural phenomena as metaphors for human personal and social interaction. I choose elements based on their expressive, poetic qualities. My current project, Cumulus uses stock footage of a blossoming cumulus cloud and rerecorded speech. Through the repetition and alteration of these elements in time, the image abstracts into light and color while any recognizable speech is replaced by melodic remnants, the natural resonant frequencies of the room. The repetition and breakdown of these elements recalls the actions and functions of memory in my experiences of loss. My hope is that viewers relate to the piece through shared experiences with sounds and natural phenomenon and be able to extend the proposal through personal interpretation. I have a BFA in Sculpture from Alfred University and an MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College. As an educator, I have taught art and technology at all levels of the educational spectrum. I have worked with students from varied backgrounds in both the U.S. and Ecuador. As an artist, I have used technology as a bridge to connect disciplines for over 16 years. I combine installation sculpture with sound compositions, performance involving actions as well as instruments, graphic composition, video projection, animation, radio broadcasts, and public billboards. My artwork has been presented in schools, galleries, museums, radio broadcasts, and public spaces. I have been involved in a number of collaborative projects with my husband, Juan Ormaza and with the group Transcultural Minga. |
